Rules of Interchanging Degree of Comparison

Please see the following rules for all types of exam preparation.

Degrees and its Rules

Superlative to Positive

Rule-1: Superlative Degree-এর পূর্বে শুধু The থাকলে তাকে positive করতে হলে-
Sentence-এর শুরুতে No other + superlative degree এর পরের অংশ + verb + so/as + superlative-এর positive (simple adjective) + as + subject বসে।

Example:
1. Rakib is the best boy in the village. Positive: No other boy in the village is as good as Rakib.
2. Moni is the most beautiful girl in her family. Positive: No other girl in her family is as beautiful as Moni.

Rule-2: Superlative Degree-এর পূর্বে One of the থাকলে তাকে positive করতে হলে-
Sentence এর শুরুতে Very few + Superlative Degree এর পরের অংশ + verb (plural) + so/as + superlative এর positive form + পুনরায় as + subject বসে।

Example:
1. Akbar was one of the greatest emperors all over the world. Positive: Very few emperors all over the world were as great as Akbar.
2. This is one of the finest pictures of the world. Positive: Very few pictures of the world are as fine as this.

Positive to Superlative

Rule-1: Positive Degree-এর sentence-এর শুরুতে No other থাকলে তাকে superlative করতে হলে-
Sentence-এর শেষে অবস্থিত subject-টি প্রথমে + subject-এর number অনুযায়ী verb + The + positive-এর superlative form + No other-এর পরের অংশ বসে।

Example:
1. No other girl in the class is as clever as she. Superlative: She is the cleverest girl in the class.
2. No other boy in the college is as meritorious as he. Superlative: He is the most meritorious boy in the college.

Rule-2: Positive Degree-এর sentence-টি Very few দ্বারা শুরু হলে তাকে Superlative করতে হলে-
Sentence-এর শেষের subject-টি প্রথমে + subject অনুযায়ী verb + One of the + positive-এর superlative form + very few এর পরের অংশ বসে।

Example:
1. Very few metals in the world are as useful as iron. Superlative: Iron is one of the most useful metals in the world.
2. Very few leaders in our country were as great as Sher-e-Bangla. Superlative: Sher-e-Bangla was one of the greatest leaders in our country.

Superlative to Comparative

Rule-1: Superlative Degree-এর পূর্বে শুধু The থাকলে তাকে Comparative degree করতে হলে-
অপরিবর্তিত অবস্থায় subject verb প্রথমে বসে + The উঠে যায় + superlative এর comparative form + tahn বসে + anyother বসে + noun/pronoun + বাকি অংশ (থাকলে) বসে। তবে Superlative Degree-এর পর of all থাকলে comparative- than এর পর all other বসে এবং পরবর্তী noun বা pronoun-টি plural হয়।

Example:
1. He is the tallest boy in the class. Comparative: He is taller than any other boy in the class.
2. This is the most precious of all mangoes. Comparative: This is more precious than all other mangoes.

Rule-2: Superlative-এর পূর্বে One of the থাকলে তাকে Comparative Degree করতে হলে-
প্রদত্ত subject verb বসে + One of the উঠে যায় + Superlative-এর Comparative form + than + most other/ many other/ some other + superlative এর পরের অংশ বসে।

Example:
1. Jafar Iqbal is one of the most popular writers in Bengali literature. Comparative: Jafar Iqbal is more popular than most other writers in Bengali literature.
2. She is one of the loveliest girls in the college. Comparative: She is lovelier than most other girls in the college.

Comparative to Superlative

Rule-1: Comparative পরবর্তী than এর পর any other/ all other থাকলে Superlative করতে হলে-
Subject, verb অপরিবর্তিতভাবে বসে + the + Comparative-এর Superlative form + than any other/ all other উঠে যায় + বাকি অংশ বসে।

Example:
1. Mr. Raza is older than any other person in the village. Superlative: Mr. Reza is the oldest person in the village.
2. Shohag is more comfortable than any other coach. Superlative: Shohag is the most comfortable coach.

Rule-2: Comparative পরবর্তী than-এর পরে most other/ many other/ some other থাকলে তাকে Superlative করতে হলে Subject + verb + one of the + Comparative-এর Superlative form + than most other ইত‌্যাদি উঠে যায় + বাকি অংশ বসে।

Example:
1. Runa Laila is more wonderful than most other singers in Asia. Superlative: Runa Laila is one of the most wonderful singers in Asia.
2. Ronju is taller than most other boys I have ever seen. Superlative: Ronju is one of the tallest boy I have ever seen.

Comparative to Positive

Rule-1: Comparative Degree-এর পরবর্তী than-এর পর any other/ all other থাকলে তাকে Positive করতে হলে-
Sentence-এর শুরুতে No other বসে + comparative-এর পরের অংশ + verb + as/so + Comparative-এর Positive form + পুনরায় as + subject বসে।

Example:
1. He is better than any other boy in the class. Positive: No other boy in the class is as good as he.
2. The cow is more useful than any other animal. Positive: No other animal is as useful as the cow.

Rule-2: Comparative Degree-এর পরবর্তী than-এর পর most other/ few other/ many other/ some other থাকলে তাকে Positive করতে হলে-
Sentence-এর শুরুতে very few বসে + Comparative এর পরের অংশ + verb + as/so + Comparative-এর Positive form + as + subject.

Example:
1. He is taller than most other boys in the class. Positive: Very few boys in the class are as tall as he.

Rule-3: Comparative Degree-এর পরবর্তী than-এর পর any other/ most other/ few other/ many other ইত‌্যাদি না থাকলে তাকে Positive করতে হলে-
শেষের অর্থাৎ than-এর পরের noun/ pronoun-টি প্রথমে বসে + উক্ত subject অনুযায়ী verb + not (affirmative হলে) + so/as + comparative-এর Positive form + পুনরায় as + প্রথম subject-টি বসে।

Example:
1. Moni is smaller than Roni. Positive: Roni is not as small as Moni.
2. Lion is stronger than tiger. Positive: Tiger is not as strong as lion.

Rule-4: Comparative Degree-এর sentence- not/ no less .... than or less .... than থাকলে তাকে Positive করতে হলে-
প্রদত্ত subject verb প্রথমে বসে + negative হলে no/not উঠে যায়/ affirmative হলে not/ no + less-এর পরিবর্তে as + Comparative-এর Positive form + than-এর পরিবর্তে পুনরায় as + বাকি অংশ বসে।

Example:
1. She is less active than her sister. Positive: She is not as active as her sister.
2. He was not less wise than any other man. Positive: He was as wise as any other man.

Rule-5: Comparative Degree-এর sentence- No sooner (do/ does)/ had .... than থাকলে তাকে Positive করতে হলে-
Sentence-এর শুরুতে As soon as বসে + than-এর পূর্বে clause-এর subject verb-এর past form + than-এর পূর্ববর্তী বাকি অংশ + কমা (,) + than-এর পরবর্তী অংশ বসে।

Example:
1. So sooner had the bell rung than I entered the class room. Positive: As soon as the bell rang, I entered the class room.

Positive to Comparative

Rule-1: Positive Degree- sentence-এর শুরুতে No other থাকলে তাকে Comparative করতে হলে-
Sentence-এর শুরুতে শেষের as-এর পর subject-টি বসে + subject-এর person number অনুসারে verb + positive Degree-এর Comparative form + than + any other + প্রদত্ত sentence-এর no other-এর পরের অংশ বসে।

Example:
1. No other picture in the world is as fine as this. Comparative: This is finer than any other picture in the world.
2. No other river in Bangladesh is as big as the Meghna. Comparative: The Meghna is bigger than any other river in Bangladesh.

Rule-2: Positive Degree-এর sentence-এর শুরুতে very few থাকলে তাকে Positive করতে হলে-
Sentence-এর শেষের subject প্রথমে বসে + verb + Positive Degree-এর Comparative form + than + most other/ many other/ some other/ few other + প্রদত্ত Sentence-এর very few-এর পরের অংশ বসে।

Example:
1. Very few persons in the world are as great as Nelson. Comparative: Nelson is greater than most other persons in the world.
2. Very few stories are as thrilling as the story told by the ancient mariner. Comparative: The story told by the ancient mariner is more thrilling than most other stories.

Rule-3: Positive Degree- sentence-এ দুয়ের মাঝে তুলনা বুঝালে তার Comparative করতে হলে-
Sentence-এর শেষের subject প্রথমে বসে + subject অনুসারে verb + not (Affirmative হলে, negative হলে not বসে না) + Positive Degree-এর Comparative + than + প্রদত্ত subject বসে।

Example:
1. Lion is as strong as tiger. Comparative: Tiger is not stronger than lion.
2. Water is not as light as oil. Comparative: Oil is lighter than water.

Rule-4: Positive Degree-এর sentence- as .... as/ not as .... as থাকলে তাকে comparative করতে হলে as-এর পরিবর্তে less/ no less .... than/ less .... than-এ পরিবর্তিত হয়।

Example:
1. She is not as active as her sister. Comparative: She is less active than her sister.
2. He was as wise as any other person. Comparative: He was not less wise than any other person.
